Can a PocketWizard MiniTT1 use HyperSync with an on-camera flash in its hot shoe?

I’m using PocketWizard MiniTT1/FlexTT5 triggers with a Canon 430EX. When the flash is used remotely on a FlexTT5, I can shoot above normal X-sync speeds. But when I mount the 430EX directly on top of the MiniTT1 on the camera, the camera limits shutter speed to about 1/200 unless the flash itself is using high-speed sync.
Is this expected behavior? Does HyperSync only apply over the radio link, meaning I’d need a FlexTT5 for the remote flash and regular HSS for any flash mounted in the transmitter’s hot shoe?

HyperSync is designed to work over radio. The hot-shoe on transceiver is pretty much directly connected to camera underneath - if you have a flash there, you have to enable HSS on it to use shutter speeds over X-sync.

Yes — that’s expected. HyperSync is intended to work over the radio-triggered path, not for a flash mounted directly in the transmitter’s hot shoe.
On the MiniTT1/FlexTT5 hot shoe, the flash connection is essentially a pass-through to the camera. So if you mount a flash there, the camera treats it like a normal on-camera flash and limits you to standard X-sync unless the flash itself is set to HSS/FP mode.
So in practice:
- Remote flash over PocketWizard radio: HyperSync can be used.
- Flash mounted on top of the MiniTT1/FlexTT5: use the flash’s normal HSS if you want shutter speeds above 1/200.
If your goal is to keep the on-camera unit compact, the MiniTT1 is fine, but it won’t give HyperSync to a flash sitting directly on top of it. For that setup, faster shutter speeds require HSS on the flash.
