Why does my Sony a7 III sometimes save JPEGs even when image quality is set to RAW?

My Sony a7 III is set to record RAW, but sometimes it starts saving JPEG files only. I wondered if this happens when there isn’t enough free space left on the SD card for another RAW file. Can the camera switch to JPEG automatically when the card is nearly full, and is there a way to prevent that so it keeps shooting RAW until the card is completely full?

After doing some research I found 3 more people encountering this. At first I thought the same as you: the space does no longer suffise for another raw, so the camera fills the rest with jpgs.

However, this also happened to a wedding photographer in-midst a burst shooting. So there is no way, the person could accidentally switch any relevant setting while holding down the shutter button.

I believe you encountered a firmware bug.

You can find out your version number in the settings / setup-tag / version. With that information please go to the Sony website and check if that is the most current version.

The reported behavior does not sound like a normal “card almost full” feature. Based on the community responses, the more likely explanation is a firmware issue rather than the camera intentionally switching from RAW to JPEG to use remaining space.

A good first step is to check your camera’s firmware version in the setup menu and compare it with the latest version available from Sony. If your camera is not current, updating the firmware may resolve the problem.

In normal operation, a camera should not randomly change image quality settings just because the card is low on space. If it keeps happening after updating, also review your image quality and card settings to make sure nothing else is changing the record mode unexpectedly.
