Why does my RAW image look over-edited after opening from Adobe Camera Raw into Photoshop Elements?

When I edit a RAW file in Adobe Camera Raw, it looks correct there, but after I click "Open Image" and continue working in Photoshop Elements, the image appears much more heavily edited. I end up compensating by under-editing in Camera Raw first. Why would the image look different between Camera Raw and Elements, and what settings should I check?

This usually points to a display or color-management mismatch between Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop Elements, rather than the RAW edits themselves changing.

Things to check:

  • Color space/profile: Make sure the image is being opened into Elements with the expected working space/profile.
  • Monitor/profile issues: If one program is honoring your monitor ICC profile differently, the same file can appear different.
  • Bit depth/settings: Differences in how the file is handed off from Camera Raw to Elements can affect appearance.
  • Preview/rendering differences: Camera Raw and Elements may show previews a little differently, especially if one is unmanaged or using different settings.

In Camera Raw, review the workflow/options link at the bottom of the window and confirm the color space, bit depth, and size being passed to Elements. In Elements, check color settings and whether color management is enabled. If possible, compare the image with the same embedded profile in both apps.

If those settings match, the issue is most likely monitor/profile related rather than over-editing.
