Why does my Olympus E-410 show "--" for aperture with some lenses?

I'm using an Olympus E-410 and have started trying manual-focus prime lenses as well as Olympus autofocus lenses. Sometimes the camera shows "--" instead of an f-number in the viewfinder and on the LCD. When this happens, I can't change aperture from the camera on electronic Olympus lenses. With manual-focus lenses that have an aperture ring, images also seem off unless the lens is set correctly. What causes the "--" aperture display, and how should the aperture ring be set when using these lenses?

As I understand you have a lens with manual diaphragm ring.
Your camera will be able to adjust it only if you close it to maximum.
In other words, if you want your camera to be able to change aperture, you need to fully close the aperture manually.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
"--" usually means the camera is not getting usable aperture control information from the lens. With a manual-focus lens that has its own diaphragm/aperture ring, the camera cannot control the aperture unless the ring is set to the position that hands control back to the camera.
Based on the community answer, you should set the lens’s aperture ring to its fully closed/maximum setting so the camera can adjust aperture electronically. If the ring is left in another position, the body may show "--" and you may lose aperture control.
If this also happens with Olympus autofocus lenses, check that the lens is mounted properly and the electrical contacts are making a good connection, since the body should normally display an f-number with those lenses.
