How can I improve manual focusing on an Olympus E-PL3 with a manual Voigtländer lens?

I’m using a Voigtländer 35mm f/1.4 on an Olympus E-PL3 via an M-mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter. Since the lens is manual focus only, I’ve been using the camera’s magnified view to check focus on the LCD, but it slows me down when I need to do it repeatedly. Are there any better techniques or camera settings that help with manual focusing on the E-PL3?

Focus peaking is a very useful technology to assist manual focus - unfortunately, I don't think the E-PL3 implements it. The Olympus EM1 does, as does Sony's NEX line.
Otherwise (and I'm not sure whether that's what you're already doing when you say "zoom 5x") there is a focus assist functionality that lets you see the focus point at 1:1 pixel size with the press of a single button.
That's all you can do, except of course to use a small aperture to increase DOF...

The E-PL3 does not offer focus peaking, so your main in-camera aid is still the magnified focus assist/1:1 view. That’s the most accurate option on this body.
To work faster, use manual-focus techniques instead of checking magnification every shot:
- Stop the lens down to increase depth of field.
- Use the lens’s distance and depth-of-field scales to zone focus or set a hyperfocal distance.
- Estimate or measure subject distance and preset focus using the lens scale.
- For street or general shooting, many photographers stop down (for example around f/8) and rely on scale focusing.
- If the subject distance doesn’t change, you usually only need to magnify and confirm focus once.
- A tripod or monopod can also help with precision.
So, on the E-PL3 there isn’t really a hidden setting that replaces magnified view. The practical improvement is to combine the magnifier with scale focusing, zone focusing, and smaller apertures. If you want peaking specifically, that requires a different camera body that supports it.
