Why does my Nissin Di622 Mark II overexpose on a Nikon Z50?

I used a Nissin Di622 Mark II successfully on Nikon D40 and D7100 bodies, but on my Nikon Z50 I often get overexposed flash photos. This happens with both direct flash and bounced flash using the built-in white card, and sometimes even when I reduce flash power on the flash itself. Is there a camera setting I should change, or is this flash not fully compatible with the Z50/mirrorless Nikon bodies?

It is not compatible with the new cameras; and it is a discontinued model. But there is a small chance that Nissin can update the firmware to make it compatible if you send it to them and pay $60... I would definitely contact them first before just sending it in.

The most likely cause is compatibility, not a camera setting. Based on the community answer, the Nissin Di622 Mark II is not fully compatible with newer Nikon Z-series cameras, and that mismatch can cause incorrect flash exposure such as overexposure.

A possible fix is a firmware update from Nissin, if they still support your unit. Contact Nissin first and ask whether your specific Di622 Mark II can be updated for Nikon Z50 compatibility before sending it in.

If no update is available, the practical solution is to use a flash model confirmed to support Nikon Z cameras. In short: your flash worked on older Nikon DSLRs, but the Z50 likely requires newer compatibility/firmware that this discontinued flash may not have.
