Why does my Nikon D5500 show “F--” and not let me change aperture with a Rokinon 24mm T1.5 lens?

I’m using a Nikon D5500 with a Rokinon/Samyang 24mm T1.5 cine lens. With this lens, the camera shows “F--” and I can’t change aperture from the camera body, but my Nikon AF-P kit lens works normally. Is something wrong with the lens or mount, or is this normal behavior?

Samyang/Rokinon lenses are "manual only". They do not perform any electronic communication with the body, so the camera cannot control the aperture of the lens. You must use the aperture ring on the lens itself to adjust the aperture; just as you must use the focus ring on the lens to focus. You will not have wide-open metering (so the metering on D3x00 and D5x00 bodies will be inaccurate, as they don't do stop-down metering) again, because the body can't tell the lens to be wide open during composition and only stop down during the exposure. You will not have lens EXIF information (focal length, aperture used, lens name, etc.)
This is why Samyang (aka Rokinon, Bower, Pro-Optic, Vivitar, Phoenix, etc. etc.) lenses are so cheap.

This is usually normal for that lens. Many Rokinon/Samyang cine lenses are fully manual and have no electronic contacts, so they do not communicate aperture or other lens data to the Nikon body. On the D5500, that means the camera shows “F--” and you must set the aperture using the ring on the lens, not the camera controls. Focus is also manual.
Because the camera and lens aren’t communicating, you may also lose lens EXIF details and metering can be limited or less accurate on some Nikon entry-level bodies.
First, make sure the lens is fully mounted and locked with a click. If the message seems intermittent, check that the lens mount and contacts are clean. But if this is a manual cine version of the Rokinon 24mm, “F--” is expected behavior rather than a fault.
