Why does my Nikon D5300 change aperture when I adjust shutter speed in Manual mode?

I’m using a Nikon D5300 with the AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm lens. In Manual mode, when I change the shutter speed, the camera also changes the aperture at the same time. For example, increasing shutter speed changes the aperture from f/3.5 to f/4. In Manual mode I expect shutter speed and aperture to be adjusted independently. Is this a known issue, and how can I fix it?

I tried to reproduce this with a D5300 and an AF-S 18-55mm (not AF-P), it works as expected.

Try to make a factory reset on the camera first, and check if it still happens after. AF-P lenses are optimized for continuous autofocus in video mode, maybe this has something to do with your video settings.

Also contact directly Nikon support for specific gear issues, it's their job to help you.

This does not appear to be normal Manual-mode behavior. On a D5300, shutter speed and aperture should be adjustable independently in M mode.

Based on the community responses, the most likely fix is to reset the camera’s shooting settings. One user reported the issue was resolved after using Reset shooting menu in the camera settings. Another user tested a D5300 with a similar 18-55mm lens and could not reproduce the problem, which suggests it may be caused by a setting rather than a hardware fault.

What to try:

  • Go to the camera menu and use Reset shooting menu.
  • If needed, perform a broader factory reset.
  • Test again in still-photo Manual mode.

If the issue continues after resetting, contact Nikon support, especially since AF-P lenses can interact differently with some camera settings.
