Why does my Nikon D5000 show “Lens not attached” with a Soligor lens?

I mounted a Soligor 55-200 lens on my Nikon D5000, but the camera displays “Lens not attached.” The lens seems to fit physically. Why does this happen, and is there any way to use the lens on this camera?

This is a non-CPU lens, i.e. it doesn't have an electrical connection to the camera, hence the camera can't possibly "know" that there is a lens attached at all.

You are probably in an auto mode. Switch to M, set the aperture using the ring on the lens, then set the shutter speed using the dial on the camera. It should work this way.

The Soligor lens is likely a non-CPU lens, meaning it has no electronic contacts to communicate with the Nikon D5000. Because of that, the camera may report “Lens not attached” even though the lens is physically mounted.

On the D5000, this usually means automatic exposure modes won’t work normally. Try using the camera in Manual (M) mode, set the aperture on the lens’ aperture ring, and set shutter speed on the camera body. That’s the typical way to use older fully manual lenses.

If the lens mount is correct and it mounts securely, this behavior is expected for a manual, non-electronic lens rather than a fault.
