Why does my Epson Perfection V370 show vertical color bands in scans?

My Epson Perfection V370 Photo has started showing vertical colored stripes on all flatbed/document scans, even when scanning a plain white sheet. The issue appears across different software, and I’ve already tried a different USB cable, cleaning the top and underside of the glass, cleaning the white calibration strip, and cleaning the sensor. What usually causes this kind of banding, and is there a practical fix?

Problem: Hardware issue

I have tried:

  1. different scanning software
  2. different USB cable (to rule out communication errors)
  3. cleaning the document table with a dry cloth
  4. cleaning the document table with a moist cloth
  5. cleaning the white calibration strip (internal)
  6. cleaning underside of glass (internal)
  7. cleaning the sensor

Unfortunately, none of the above worked.

Epson have reviewed the case and have informed me it is a hardware issue, so there is no fix without paying for an engineer to look at it (as it happens, the fee for this is higher than the cost of the original unit).

Posting these notes here in case they're helpful for others.

Vertical color banding on a flatbed scanner like the Epson V370 is usually caused by a calibration problem or contamination in the optical path. Common causes mentioned were dirt on the glass, the white backing/mat, the calibration strip, or the sensor, since the scanner relies on calibration to correct for pixel-to-pixel sensitivity differences.

If you haven’t already, power the scanner off and carefully clean the glass and white reference areas exactly as the manufacturer recommends. In at least one reported case, dust on the glass caused a colored line and cleaning fixed it.

However, if the banding persists after trying different software, a different USB cable, and thorough cleaning of the glass, calibration strip, underside of glass, and sensor, the remaining likely cause is a hardware fault. In that case, there usually isn’t a practical user fix, and professional repair may cost more than the scanner is worth.
