Why does my Canon EOS RP switch ISO from 100 to Auto in Manual mode when using a flash trigger?

On a Canon EOS RP in Manual mode, I want to shoot studio flash at ISO 100 with manual speedlights triggered wirelessly. Even after setting ISO to 100 and disabling Auto ISO, the camera keeps reverting to Auto ISO and raising it to around 1600 while metering for ambient light. This causes inconsistent exposures.

I also tried changing flash-related settings, but with the trigger attached some options only show group mode. Is this normal behavior on the RP, or could the flash trigger be overriding camera settings?

Update: Maybe this helps someone in the future reading this. I found that the problem was not with the camera at all. It was the flash trigger. (The transmitter) I was using a Viper TTL System. I emailed them and told them of the problem. They checked it and found that there was a glitch. A few weeks later they emailed me (as promised) and sent me a link to update the firmware. ISO is staying at 100 now. Thanks for help everyone. It is much appreciated :-)

This is not normal behavior for the EOS RP in Manual mode. If the camera is set to M and Auto ISO is disabled, the camera should not keep changing ISO on its own.

Based on the community follow-up, the actual cause was the flash transmitter, not the camera. The trigger had a firmware glitch that forced ISO behavior incorrectly. After updating the trigger firmware, ISO stayed locked at 100 as expected.

So the fix is:

  • confirm the camera is in Manual mode
  • disable Auto ISO on the camera
  • test the camera without the trigger attached
  • check the trigger/transmitter for firmware updates or compatibility issues

If the problem only happens when the trigger is mounted, the trigger is the likely source.
