Why does my Canon 60D stop shooting after using the built-in flash?

My Canon 60D works normally with the built-in flash closed. But in Auto mode, if a scene needs flash, the pop-up flash raises, focuses, and takes one photo. After that, with the flash still up, pressing the shutter does nothing: the shutter won’t fire and autofocus doesn’t respond, and no error message appears. If I manually close the flash, the camera works normally again until the built-in flash is used once more. What could cause this?

Usually, this happens when people don't give it time to recharge. It may be that simple. If you are giving it time to recharge and it gives you a charged indicator light but still won't fire, then it is faulty. Send it away for repair.

The most likely cause is that the built-in flash is still recharging after the previous shot. While it’s charging, the camera may not let you take another flash photo, so it can seem unresponsive until the flash is ready again.

What to check:

  • Wait a few seconds after the first flash shot and try again.
  • Look for the flash-ready indicator before shooting.
  • In the 60D’s flash menu, make sure the built-in flash is enabled and that its control settings are set correctly.

If the flash has had enough time to recharge, the camera shows that the flash is ready, and it still won’t shoot with the pop-up flash raised, then the flash system may be faulty and the camera may need service.
