Why does Lightroom use a camera-specific lens profile for my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L?

In Lightroom Classic, enabling Profile Corrections for my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM sometimes defaults to a profile labeled "Canon EOS-1D Mark III (Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM)" instead of the expected Adobe profile for just the lens. This is odd because I don’t own or use an EOS-1D Mark III, and my other lenses only show a single lens-specific default profile.

I can manually switch it to "Adobe (Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM)," and the correction looks similar, but I’d like to understand why Lightroom is choosing the camera-specific profile and whether there’s a proper way to make the Adobe lens-only profile the default for this lens.

While this could be a Lightroom Classic bug, there is a way to "fix" it.

In the Develop Module, go to Lens Corrections, change the lens profile to Adobe (Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM), then select Save New lens profile defaults from the Setup combobox located below the Enable Profile Corrections checkbox. Newly imported photos taken with that lens should now default to that.

This appears to be due to how Adobe handles this particular lens profile, not a problem with your lens.

Canon’s older 1D-series bodies before the 1D X used an APS-H 1.3x sensor, so Adobe created a separate profile variant for that field of view. Ideally it would be labeled as a crop-specific version of the lens profile, but Lightroom shows it with the camera name instead.

Why Lightroom is selecting that profile for your files is likely a Lightroom quirk or bug. If the standard Adobe profile is the one you want, you can set it as the default:

  1. In Develop, open Lens Corrections.
  2. Choose "Adobe (Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM)".
  3. Use the Setup menu and select "Save New Lens Profile Defaults".

After that, newly imported photos with that lens should default to the Adobe profile you selected.
