Why does Godox MULTI mode only fire once when the X3 trigger is on my camera?

I’m using a Godox X3 transmitter with an AD200 Pro II. In MULTI mode I set the flash to 5 bursts at 5 Hz and 1/32 power. The transmitter and flash are paired correctly. If I press the test button with the X3 off-camera, the flash fires 5 times as expected. But when the X3 is mounted on the camera hot shoe, the strobe only fires once. What setting am I missing?

I can in parts recreate what you are saying.

If I set-up my V1 with the X3 trigger and set it to 1/32 power and 5 times at 5hz and then hold the flash test button, I get 5 flashes in one second.

If I add the trigger to my Sony a7r IV and set up my camera at usual shutter speed of 1/250 sec, I get 1 flash. It omits flashes that are not fitting into the window of open shutter time.

But if I set my camera to a shutter speed more than 1 second, I get the expected 5 flashes. Hertz (Hz) is defined by Amplitudes or Occurrences per second - or in this case, flashes per second. This means that 5 flashes at 5 flashes per second will exactly take 1 second (plus the length of the flash, which is negligible)

So to conclude:

  • Please make sure that what you set is fitting into your desired shutter speed.
  • If the issue is not resolved, please check you are on the newest X3 firmware as there has been a recent update. My X3s for Sony is currently on V1.14 - different variants will have different current firmware versions. Please make sure to get the correct firmware for your variant.

Most likely, your camera shutter speed is too fast for the full MULTI burst sequence.

In MULTI mode, 5 flashes at 5 Hz takes about 1 second total. When the trigger is mounted on the camera, the flash can only fire while the shutter is open. If your shutter is set to something like 1/250 s, only the first flash fits inside that exposure window, so you see just one burst.

Try using a shutter speed of around 1 second or longer so all 5 flashes can occur during the exposure. The test button works off-camera because it isn’t limited by the camera’s shutter timing.

So the key is: match the MULTI settings (number of flashes and frequency) to a shutter speed long enough to contain the whole sequence.
