Why does a 'New from Visible' layer in GIMP make my image look darker?

In GIMP, when I use Layer > New from Visible, the image appears darker afterward even though the new layer is set to Normal mode at 100% opacity. What causes this, and how can I avoid it?

This usually happens when one or more of the underlying source layers are not fully opaque. New from Visible creates a composite of what you currently see, including any transparency. If that new composite layer is then placed above the original partially transparent layers at 100% opacity, the image can appear darker because you’re effectively stacking the visible content again.
How to avoid it:
- Check whether any source layers have opacity below 100%.
- Look for transparency you may not notice because of the checkerboard/background display.
- Compare the Layers panel before and after creating the visible layer.
If all source layers are already fully opaque, the behavior is less expected and you’d want to inspect the exact layer stack and settings more closely.
