On some Nikon cameras, the zero on top LCDs, viewfinder displays, and certain shutter-speed dials appears smaller than a typical full-size 7-segment-style 0. Instead of a full rectangular zero, it can look more like the lower half of an 8. Why did Nikon use this style? Was it meant to improve readability or avoid confusion with other numbers?

The smaller 0 on the dial has in my view a much simpler explanation:

If the 0 were normal size than it would touch the number above and below. The smaller 0s appear only on the longer numbers (not on M90, 30, 60 but on 250, 500, 1000).
