I’m trying to make two photos that are identical except for noise, using a tripod and remote release. On both my phone and DSLR, two shots taken back-to-back still show tiny pixel-level shifts. On a phone this surprises me because there are few or no obvious moving parts. What causes these slight translations between exposures, and is it realistic to expect two completely identical images?

Tiny sensors with huge megapixel counts have sensels that may be only a micron wide. Virtually anything could cause the sensor to move a few microns. Looking at your phone may be enough to shift the image a pixel or two.
