Why do Canon .CR2 files open incorrectly in RawTherapee and other Linux raw editors?

I switched to a Canon camera and found that my .CR2 files open incorrectly in several Linux raw processors, including RawTherapee, Darktable, UFRaw, and Rawstudio. The images appear badly decoded instead of displaying normally.

What causes this, and how can I fix it? I normally use RawTherapee and would prefer to keep using it if possible.

RawTherapee supports Canon PowerShot G16 starting RawTherapee version 4.2.

This usually happens when the raw converter does not yet fully support that camera’s specific CR2 variant.

From the community answers, RawTherapee added support for the Canon PowerShot G16 in version 4.2, so using an older version can cause corrupted-looking output. Updating RawTherapee is the first thing to try.

Another possibility is that the camera is set to a reduced-resolution RAW mode. Some Canon cameras can save more than one RAW size, and older software may only decode the full-resolution CR2 correctly. If so, switch the camera to full-size RAW and test again.

So the practical fixes are:

  • update RawTherapee (and any other raw software) to a version that supports your Canon model
  • check whether your camera is using a smaller RAW size and switch to full-resolution RAW if needed

If multiple Linux raw editors show the same problem, that strongly suggests a support/decoder issue rather than a problem with the image files themselves.
