Why do black spots appear in the same place on my photos?

I’m seeing many small black spots in my images from a Nikon D7000. Cleaning the lens did not help, and the spots still appear in the photos, including on bright areas like ceilings and chairs. What causes this, and how can I fix it?

Nikons have a reputation of coming from the factory with a little too much oil on the shutter mechanisms. Some of the excess oil eventually finds its way onto the sensor. What you are seeing in your photos is the shadow of the oil (and the dust stuck to it) on your sensor. You will probably have to go through several cycles of cleaning your sensor before the problem will gradually go away. Any type of dust spots on the sensor (actually on the IR filter in front of the sensor) will be darker, sharper, and more noticeable when shooting with narrower apertures than when shooting with wider apertures.
For more on why dust spots are darker and sharper using narrower apertures, see Question About the D600 Dirty Sensor Test - Why Use a High f-Stop? and Why use a small aperture when trying to see sensor dust?

These spots are most likely dust or oil on the sensor assembly (technically the filter in front of the sensor), not on the lens. Lens dirt usually does not create small, well-defined dark marks in the same place across multiple photos.
A good clue is whether the spots stay in the same position from shot to shot. Sensor dust/oil will do that, and it becomes more visible at smaller apertures (higher f-numbers), where the spots look darker and sharper.
On some Nikon bodies, excess oil from the shutter mechanism has also been known to reach the sensor area, where it can trap dust. If that’s the case, one cleaning may not be enough and several cleanings may be needed before it stops recurring.
What to do:
- Check whether the spots remain in the same place in every image.
- Test at a small aperture to make them easier to see.
- Use the camera’s sensor cleaning function if available.
- If the spots persist, have the sensor professionally cleaned, especially if oil is involved.
It is unlikely to be bad pixels, since those usually appear as tiny sharp points rather than soft, out-of-focus spots.
