Why can't I select AF-C on my Nikon D5500?

On my Nikon D5500, the Focus Mode menu only shows AF-A and MF. I expected to see AF-C as an option based on the manual and tutorials. Is there a setting or shooting mode that enables AF-C on this camera?

Make sure the mode dial is set to one of: Program, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority, or Manual exposure mode. From page 78 of the D5500 Reference Manual,
Note that AF-S and AF-C are available only in modes P, S, A, and M.
