Why are my star trails blurry after stacking?

I made my first stacked star-trail image in StarStaX, but the trails look blurry. I used a sturdy tripod, cable release, manual focus, 30-second exposures at f/4, ISO 250, and 24mm. Before shooting, I shined a light on the foreground and focused there. What likely caused the blur, and how should I focus for sharper star trails?

shined a light to focus on foreground beforehand

If you focused on the foreground then the most likely explanation is that the stars are blurry because they are out of focus, at f/4 the depth of field is not sufficient to contain both the foreground and the stars (which are effectively at "infinity" or as far away as you can get).

I would recommend you try to manually focus on the stars themselves, this is difficult as they are so dim, even with live-view and high ISO settings. The best approach is to attempt to focus as best you can, shoot a short trails exposure, check focus on the rear LCD at maximum magnification, if it's repeat those steps and keep going until you nail the focus.

The most likely cause is focus. If you focused on the foreground, the stars were probably out of focus. At 24mm and f/4, depth of field may not be enough to keep both a nearby foreground subject and stars at infinity acceptably sharp.

For star trails, focus on the stars (or as close to infinity as possible), not the foreground. This can be tricky because stars are dim, so a practical method is:

  1. Manually focus as accurately as you can toward infinity.
  2. Take a short test exposure.
  3. Zoom in on the image on the rear LCD at maximum magnification.
  4. Adjust focus and repeat until the stars look sharp.

Once the stars are sharply focused, shoot your full sequence for stacking. If you want both foreground and stars sharp, you may need to stop down more or use a different focusing approach, but based on your settings and description, foreground focus is the main reason the trails look blurry.
