Why are my film photos blurry on a Fujifilm Tiara point-and-shoot?

I’m new to film photography. I shot several rolls of Fuji 400 in a Fujifilm Tiara, and many of the developed photos look blurry or soft, especially in lower light. Since it’s a point-and-shoot, I can’t control many settings. What usually causes this, and what can I do to get sharper results next time?

To me these photos actually look like they are suffering from a slow shutter speed. This can be a result of your camera lens having a closed down aperture setting, or a slow film sensitivity (ASA/ISO rating), which forces the shutter to stay open longer to get a properly exposed image. This gives you motion blur in the images. Unfortunately without a more advanced camera that lets you change those settings, this is something that could only otherwise be solved by using a tripod, or adding more light to the scene.

The blur in your samples is most likely camera shake from slow shutter speeds, not a focus problem. In low light, your Tiara has to keep the shutter open longer to expose ISO 400 film, and any hand movement during that time causes motion blur.
With a point-and-shoot, you usually can’t directly set shutter speed or aperture, so your options are mainly:
- shoot in brighter light
- keep the camera as steady as possible
- brace it against something or use a tripod if possible
- avoid moving the camera when pressing the shutter
- check the manual for any low-light guidance or warning behavior
Also, film is less forgiving than digital in low light because the film speed is fixed for the whole roll. Small softness can also be more noticeable when viewing prints or scans at high magnification. One answer also suggested the first image may show some lens softness, but the main issue appears to be motion blur from slow exposures.
