Which photo metadata fields are most worth filling in for your images?

I'm adding metadata/IPTC information to my photos in Adobe Bridge/Lightroom and noticed there are many possible fields. I already plan to include basics like my name, keywords, and the photo location, but I'm unsure how much more is worth the effort. Should I also fill in creator contact information and copyright details? Which metadata fields do photographers typically prioritize, especially for searching, organization, and protecting their work?

In addition to the obvious things like keywords, I use a metadata preset in Lightroom to automatically add my name, contact information, website URL, and copyright information to every photo as it is imported.
Proving copyright infringement is significantly easier if you have contact info in the metadata, since most infringers aren't savvy enough to remove it.

A practical approach is: fill in the fields that help you identify, find, and protect your images later.
Common high-value fields are:
- creator/photographer name
- copyright information
- contact details (email, website, phone if you want)
- keywords
- location/geotagging
- title
- caption/description
Many photographers use a metadata preset in Lightroom or similar software to automatically apply the core fields—name, contact info, website, and copyright—on import. That saves time and ensures consistency.
Contact information is worth adding if you want people to be able to reach you and because embedded ownership/contact details can help when copyright issues arise. Keywords, captions, and location data are especially useful for searching large libraries later. Some photographers add very detailed IPTC data only to their best or selected images, since filling every possible field for every file can be time-consuming.
So yes: bother with creator contact info and copyright. Then add as much descriptive metadata as is realistic for your workflow.
