I’m comparing entry-level DSLR bodies and want to know which Nikon models are roughly equivalent to the Canon EOS 550D or 600D. What are the main similarities, and are there any notable advantages or drawbacks versus the Canon models?

The Nikon D5000 is roughly equivalent to the 550d. The Canon has a higher megapixel rating, but most other specs are pretty similar. The D5000 has now been superceded by new models: the D3100 and D7000.

Reams and reams have been written on the Canon vs. Nikon debate, and I'm not about to add to that (other than to say, GO NIKON!); try visiting DPReview.com for in-depth, impartial reviews.

A rough Nikon equivalent to the Canon EOS 550D/600D is the Nikon D3100, with the older D5000 also in a similar class. The D5000 was later replaced by newer Nikon models, including the D3100 and D7000.

Based on the answers, the Canon 550D has a higher megapixel count than the D5000, but otherwise the cameras are broadly similar in features and market position. The D3100 is also considered close in price point and capability.

In short:

  • Nikon D3100: a close match in entry-level DSLR features and pricing
  • Nikon D5000: older but broadly comparable
  • Canon 550D: higher megapixel resolution than D5000

If you’re choosing between systems, body specs are only part of the decision. Lens selection, handling, menus, and ergonomics often matter more in day-to-day use than small spec differences.
