Which lenses will autofocus on a Nikon D40 and other Nikon bodies without a focus motor?

I have a Nikon D40, which does not have an in-body autofocus motor. Which Nikon and third-party lenses have their own focus motor and will autofocus on bodies like the D40? How can I tell from the lens name or specs whether autofocus will work?

  • Nikon with AF-I and AF-S

  • Sigma with HSM (and older ones that list as "with motor for Nikon" or the like obviously)

  • Tamron with USD (and older ones that list as "with motor for Nikon" or the like obviously)

  • Tokina lenses specifically listing "built-in AF motor drive" as a feature

For a Nikon D40, you need lenses with a built-in autofocus motor.

For Nikon lenses, look for:

  • AF-S
  • AF-I

These have their own motor and will autofocus on the D40.

Lenses marked only:

  • AI
  • AI-S
  • AF

will not autofocus on the D40.

For third-party lenses, look for their motor designations, such as:

  • Sigma HSM
  • Tamron USD
  • Tokina lenses that specifically say they have a built-in AF motor

The safest way to check is to read the lens model name and full specifications. If it explicitly says it has a built-in motor for Nikon, it should autofocus on bodies without an in-camera motor. If it does not mention a built-in motor, assume autofocus may not work and verify before buying.
