I have a Nikon D3000 and an older Nikon lens that does not have its own autofocus motor. The lens has the screw-drive coupling, but my D3000 cannot autofocus it because the camera body does not include a focus motor.

Which Nikon DSLR bodies do have a built-in autofocus motor so they can autofocus older screw-drive AF lenses?

Nikons with autofocus motor in body: D50, D70, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D7xxx, D6xx, D7xx, D8xx, all pro models (D1, D2, D2, D3, D4, Df). Models derived from those (e.g. D300/D300s, D3/D3x, etc.) also have AF motors.

Nikons without AF motors: D40, D60, D3xxx, D5xxx.

I think a D90 would make an excellent upgrade to you D3000. All the bodies with AF motors have better sensors than the D3000 except some of the older ones: D50, D70, D80, D200.

The full list can be found at Wikipedia's timeline of Nikon DSLRs. Cameras without AF motor are marked with an asterisk.

For Nikon DSLRs, the bodies with an in-camera autofocus motor generally include:

  • D50, D70, D80, D90
  • D100, D200, D300 series
  • D7xxx series
  • D6xx, D7xx, D8xx series
  • Nikon Df
  • Nikon pro bodies such as the D1, D2, D3, and D4 series

Bodies that generally do not have a built-in AF motor include:

  • D40, D60
  • D3xxx series
  • D5xxx series

If your lens is an older screw-drive AF lens, it will autofocus only on bodies with that built-in motor. On your D3000, it will work as manual focus only.

A D90 is often considered a solid upgrade path from a D3000 if you specifically want compatibility with older screw-drive AF lenses. As always, check the exact body and lens compatibility before buying, especially with closely related model variants.
