Which Canon PowerShot A-series models have an orientation sensor for auto-rotating photos?

I have a Canon PowerShot A490, and it does not appear to record orientation information for auto-rotating images. Before buying another Canon A-series compact, I’d like to know which models include an orientation sensor that writes the correct rotation information so photos display properly on the camera and on a computer. Specifically, does the A480 or A495 support this feature? Canon’s comparison tools don’t seem to list it clearly.

You can find out my checking the exif data for pictures taken with the model in question.
I looked on flickr for a sample image and found one taken with an A495 that does have the orientation marked.
This isn't a guarantee, as the data could be added later, but it certainly does make me believe that the camera does have an orientation sensor.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Some Canon PowerShot A-series models do appear to include an orientation sensor, but it may vary by model.
From the community reports:
- The PowerShot A495 likely supports orientation tagging; sample images examined online showed EXIF orientation data.
- The older PowerShot A540 was confirmed by an owner to auto-rotate images correctly both in-camera and on a computer.
- Your A490 appears not to have this feature.
A practical way to verify any specific model is to check an original, unedited sample image from that camera and inspect its EXIF metadata for an Orientation field. If the camera records orientation, most viewers and computers will auto-rotate the image correctly.
Based on the answers provided, the safest conclusion is that some A-series cameras do have the feature, and the A495 probably does, but you should verify using original sample files for the exact model before buying.
