Where can I rent a camera and lens online in the US before buying?

I’m thinking about buying a Canon 5D Mark II and a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, but I’d like to rent them first to see if they suit me. What reputable US-based online rental services ship camera gear, and are there options that don’t require a large deposit? I’ve found local rental rates around $100/day, which seems high, so I’m also wondering whether online rental is usually a better value once shipping and minimum rental periods are considered.

Two big ones I'm aware of :

Both feel reasonably priced to me, have good reputations (that I'm aware of), and have large selections (esp for Canon). If you're close to one of their physical locations, you may be able to avoid shipping costs.

Some other options:

Popular US online camera-rental options mentioned were BorrowLenses and Lensrentals; both were described as reputable, reasonably priced, and with strong Canon selection. Other services named were CameraLens Rentals, Calumet Photo, and TheLensPal.

A few practical points:

  • Some rental companies may have minimum rental periods (for example, 4 days was noted for Lensrentals).
  • Shipping costs can offset low daily rates, though the total may still compare well to local rental.
  • If you live near a company’s pickup location, you may be able to avoid shipping charges.
  • TheLensPal was specifically mentioned as not requiring a deposit.

As for cost, $100/day locally for a 5D Mark II setup was considered reasonable by one responder, especially for higher-end gear. Renting before buying is generally a smart idea, particularly for lenses, since it’s the best way to confirm that the focal length and handling suit your needs. If you already own a compatible Canon body, renting just the lens first may be the most cost-effective test.
