Where can I get a small protective case for a single 72mm filter?

I carry one 72mm circular polarizer and want a compact case I can keep in a pocket. Ideally it would be a hard plastic or metal case with some padding so the filter doesn’t rattle around. Most options I’ve found are soft pouches or multi-filter wallets. Can you buy a single-filter case on its own, or is the best option to adapt another case?

For a DIY answer, if you can get your hands on an old metal cigarette case, they should be large enough, and some thin packing foam, you could roll your own (no pun intended). The cigarette case can be found at a myriad of antique shops around, I've seen them plenty of times in such environments, both in the States and Canada, and they're usually only a few bucks.

Update: Adorama has a 4"x4" Lee pouch for one filter. A little larger than your filter, but at $8.95 it's hard to go wrong.

Yes — a single-filter case can be bought on its own, but many photographers also solve this by adapting an existing case.

From the answers, workable options include:

  • Buy a dedicated single-filter case, such as a B+W case, and add your own padding if needed.
  • Use a single-filter pouch like the Lee 4x4 pouch if a slightly larger case is acceptable.
  • Reuse a filter case from a cheap spare filter or ask other photographers if they have an extra empty case.
  • Modify your current case with thin foam, cloth, or even corrugated cardboard so the filter fits snugly and stops rattling.
  • For a DIY hard case, a small metal cigarette case with foam insert can work.

So the answer is yes, but if you can’t find the exact case you want, adding padding to a dedicated or repurposed case is a simple and effective fix.
