Nikon Picture Control Utility 2 asks me to choose a camera compatibility mode: NCP or NP2. What is the difference between these two Picture Control file types? Which one is compatible with the Nikon D3200? Also, how do you transfer a custom Picture Control to the camera?

Answering your questions directly:

  1. Nikon came out with a new version of Picture Control that has a new file extension associated to it(NP2). Some of the main benefits are: Finer adjustment of each parameter in increments of 0.25 and compatibility with the new Picture Control Flat and new parameter clarity.
  2. The D3200 is compatible with NCP, as it is about 2 years older than the D810 that first introduced NP2. As far as I can tell, as of January 2014 only the D810 and D750 fully support the NP2 file format and its associated benefits.
  3. Custom Settings can be transferred to a camera that supports custom Picture Controls via memory card and registered in the camera(see the last image on the first link below for detailed example). Note that I am not 100% confident that your camera even supports custom upload of Picture Controls.

NCP and NP2 are two Nikon Picture Control file formats. NP2 is the newer format and adds features such as finer parameter adjustments in 0.25-step increments, plus support for newer Picture Control options like Flat and Clarity. NCP is the older format used by earlier cameras.

For a Nikon D3200, you should use NCP. The D3200 predates the newer NP2-compatible bodies; NP2 support began with newer models such as the D810/D750 generation.

To load a custom Picture Control onto a compatible Nikon camera, you typically save the custom Picture Control to a memory card from Nikon’s software, insert the card into the camera, and then register/import the custom Picture Control from the camera’s menu. Exact menu names vary by model.

One caution: not every camera supports the same level of custom Picture Control transfer and registration, so check the D3200 manual/menu options to confirm what it can import and store.
