I use a Canon EOS R with SDXC cards and want a simple, lightweight backup solution for multi-week travel. I currently have two 128GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC cards and would like an extra backup so I don’t lose all my photos or video if a card fails or gets lost. What are the easiest travel-friendly options for backing up SDXC cards without carrying a full laptop?

A few practical travel options came up:
- Use multiple SD cards and rotate them daily. This is the simplest and lightest approach. It limits losses if a card is lost or corrupted, but it is still only a single copy.
- Back up to a phone or tablet with an OTG/card-reader setup. This is a lightweight, low-cost option if you already travel with a phone or tablet. For more safety, copy again from the phone/tablet to a USB flash drive so you have two copies before reusing a card.
- Use a dedicated backup device with an SD slot. A portable SSD backup device can copy cards without a computer and may be the most convenient standalone option, though it adds cost and another device to carry.
For best protection while traveling, keep the originals and backups in different places. In general, the safest lightweight workflow is: shoot on multiple cards, back up each day to a second device, and don’t keep both copies together.

The Gnarbox 2.0 SSD seems to best the easiest, lightest-weight, and most convenient computer-free solution for backing up — and even editing and organizing (via tablet or smartphone apps) — collected images during travel. It has a built-in SD card slot (supporting SDXC), and a removable battery. The device is charged via USB-C.
The only inconvenient thing about the device is the price, which is $500 for the 256 GB version, up to $900 for the 1 TB version.
