What wide-angle lens options make sense on a Canon 550D if I plan to switch to full frame later?

I use a Canon 550D (APS-C) and want an ultra-wide lens now, but I may move to a full-frame Canon body later. I’d prefer to avoid EF-S lenses if possible so I don’t have to replace them, which seems to rule out lenses like the Canon EF-S 10-22mm and similar APS-C-only options from Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina. Aside from the Sigma 12-24, are there any practical wide-angle choices that work well now and also make sense for a future full-frame upgrade?

When is this "eventually" going to happen? If not in the near future (it never is...), than I think you should positively consider the EF-S10-22mm. It is an amazing lens and when time to upgrade comes, you can resell it with a relatively limited loss. Think about bundling it with the Rebel upon sale.

On a Canon APS-C body like the 550D, there really aren’t many full-frame lenses that give you a true ultra-wide field of view. That’s why lenses in the 10–20mm range are so common for crop cameras.

The Sigma 12-24 is one of the few full-frame-compatible options, but the community feedback here is that it’s not especially strong, and an update may be worth waiting for.

Realistically, if your move to full frame is not soon, the best choice is usually to buy a good APS-C ultra-wide now, such as the EF-S 10-22mm, and plan to replace or resell it later. Crop ultra-wide zooms and normal zooms often do need to be replaced when moving to full frame; longer lenses transition more easily.

You could use a full-frame ultra-wide like a 16-35mm or 17-40mm on the 550D, but on crop they behave more like a moderate wide-to-standard zoom, so they’re not an ideal substitute for a true APS-C ultra-wide.
