What tools help plan a landscape shoot for sun position and scouting?

I want to plan landscape photos in advance. I’m looking for an online tool to help visualize a location, and especially a tool that shows where the sun will rise/set at a specific place and time. I’d prefer something other than Google Earth for scouting.
I’d also like practical advice on timing: how early should I arrive before sunrise or sunset, and is it worth visiting ahead of time to explore the location?

Are you familiar with The Photographer's Ephemeris?
That will help decide where the sun and moon will be at a given time at a specific location. I use that to help me during an initial scouting session.
Truly stunning landscapes are usually created with a mixture of knowledge, preparedness, and patience. The best weather rarely occurs on your first visit to a site. :)

Useful planning tools mentioned by photographers include The Photographer’s Ephemeris and SunCalc. Both can show sun position for a specific location and time, which is very helpful for sunrise/sunset planning. Pashadelic was also suggested as a planning aid for finding photo spots and checking sun/moon timing, though it isn’t a full 3D tool.
For workflow, many photographers do an initial scouting visit first, then return when conditions look promising. Great landscape images usually come from preparation, local knowledge, and patience—not just a first visit.
As for arrival time, getting there well before the key light is usually smart so you can explore compositions, set up safely, and adapt if conditions change. For sunrise or sunset, many photographers aim to arrive early enough to scout calmly rather than rushing at the exact moment.
