What tape or adhesive should I use to mount a photo in a mat?

I’m starting to print, mount, and frame my photos with mat boards instead of borderless poster-style frames. I’ve heard that ordinary tape can damage prints over time, so I’m trying to find the right archival-safe way to attach a photo to a mat.
Should I be looking for acid-free or archival tape? Is hinging the print to the mat the usual method, or are mounting strips or spray adhesives better? Are there any commonly recommended brands?

I use Lineco Self Adhesive Mounting Strips. The advantage of these is that the photo is not mounted physically at all to the mat. This takes into account the different rates of expansion (due to humidity changes) that the photo and the mat have, the photo will never buckle since it floats on the back of the mat.
Plus it is super easy and cheap also!

For matted prints, the safest general choice is archival, acid-free mounting materials. Regular tape can yellow or damage the print over time.
A common standard is acid-free linen tape used as a hinge at the top of the print rather than fully taping it down. Hinging helps the print move naturally with humidity changes instead of buckling.
Another good option is archival mounting strips, which let the print “float” behind the mat without being directly adhered to it. That can be especially helpful because the print and mat board can expand differently.
Lineco is a widely recommended brand for archival framing supplies, including linen tape and mounting strips.
Spray photo mount can hold a print very flat, but it is a more permanent full-mount approach and is generally less flexible than hinging or strips.
The best method can depend on the paper, inks, mat board, backing, and how archival you want the finished piece to be, but in general: choose acid-free archival materials, and prefer hinging or mounting strips over ordinary tape.
