What software can identify which camera or program likely created a JPEG without using EXIF?

I'm looking for software that can analyze a JPEG's compression signature or artifacts and make an educated guess about what camera model or image-editing software created or saved it, without relying on EXIF metadata. I remember a tool that compared the file against a database of known JPEG signatures. What was it, and is there current software that still does this?

Try JPEGSnoop:

JPEGsnoop is a detailed JPEG image decoder and analysis tool. It reports all image metadata and can even help identify if an image has been edited.

As explained on the JPEGSnoop webpage:

One of the latest features in JPEGsnoop is an internal database that compares an image against a large number of compression signatures. JPEGsnoop reports what digital camera or software was likely used to generate the image.

A well-known tool for this is JPEGsnoop. It analyzes JPEG structure and compression signatures, then compares them against an internal database to estimate which camera or software likely created the file. It can also help indicate whether an image may have been edited, and it does this based on the JPEG data rather than just EXIF.

Another option mentioned is Amped Authenticate, a professional forensic tool with a richer, customizable database. It is commercial software aimed more at forensic and law-enforcement workflows.

So if you’re remembering a free, widely known utility, it was most likely JPEGsnoop.
