I want to buy a circular polarizing filter for my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, but searching for a “50mm filter” mostly shows 49mm or 52mm options. Do filters match the lens focal length, or do I need to look for a different size? How can I find the correct filter size for this lens?

Yes, you are looking at the wrong number. Since the filter screws to the front of the lens, the only number that matters is the diameter of the filter thread, not the focal length of the lens.

Look at the front end of the lens. Around the glass is a ring with text on it. One number will have a symbol a little like Ø next to it, probably 52. This is the filter size.

Filters are sized by the lens’s front filter thread diameter, not by the lens focal length. So for a 50mm lens, you should not search for a “50mm filter” unless the filter thread itself is 50mm.

Check the front of the lens barrel or lens cap area for a number next to the Ø symbol. That number is the filter size you need. For the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, that marking is typically Ø49, so you would want a 49mm circular polarizer.

In short: look for the filter thread size marked on the lens, and buy a polarizer in that size.
