I’m looking for photography DVDs or video courses where the instructor shows how an image is created, including setup, camera settings, lighting, step-by-step process, and common mistakes to avoid. Recommendations for beginner-friendly or lighting-focused training would be especially helpful.

The strobist lighting seminar DVDs are very good if you are at all interested in lighting (which all aspiring photographers should be in my opinion!)

Yes—this is a useful thing to look for, and several well-regarded options were mentioned. For lighting, the Strobist lighting seminar DVDs are recommended, and Zack Arias’ OneLight Workshop is especially praised for clearly demonstrating dramatic portraits using a single light. Karl Taylor’s DVDs are also considered solid for beginners, with techniques that transfer across different genres. KelbyTraining can be hit-or-miss, but courses taught by Jack Reznicki were specifically recommended. If you’re open to streaming or online classes rather than DVDs, CreativeLIVE was also highlighted for strong photography workshops, including beginner, children’s photography, videography, and vision/creativity topics. In general, the best learning videos are the ones that show the full workflow: planning, lighting setup, exposure choices, and discussion of mistakes and why certain decisions were made.
