I’m new to photography and would like to explore whether I can eventually make a living from it. I currently have a DSLR, enjoy taking photos, and am interested in portraits and landscapes in the long term. I’m based in London and would like advice on the best way to begin, including what kind of beginner training or courses I should look for.

Read this guide by Ken Rockwell: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/go-pro.htm

is totally enlightening...

If you don't have time to read it, let me summarise it: do not go professional.

The article a little bit dream shattering, but the sad truth is that very few people can make a living with photography (many try and most struggle), if you really like photography it's more enjoyable as a hobby than as a profession.

A good starting point is to treat this as two separate skills: photography and business. The community’s main advice is that earning a living from photography is difficult, and success depends as much on sales, marketing, and running a business as it does on taking strong images.

If you’re just starting out, look for beginner-to-advanced photography classes locally—community college, adult education, or local photography groups can all be good options. At the same time, consider learning basic business skills such as pricing, client communication, promotion, and bookkeeping.

It also helps to be realistic: many people enjoy photography more as a hobby, and many talented photographers still need additional income streams. Before committing fully, build your technical skills until using your camera, lenses, and lighting feels natural, then test the market with small jobs or portrait sessions.

In short: learn the fundamentals of photography, learn business basics, and don’t assume great photos alone will create a sustainable career.
