What online services are good for sharing client proof galleries securely?

I’m doing more client shoots and need a way to post proof images online for clients to review. I don’t want unedited proofs to be easily downloadable, so I’m looking for a service with features like private or password-protected galleries, watermarking, and limits on image downloads or display size. What sites are commonly used for this?

SmugMug.com for sure. Tons of security features both to protect the photographer's work (right click protection, watermarking, image size limitations) and to protect privacy (password protected galleries, password protected sites, unlisted galleries). Not to mention all the commerce features and other Pro oriented stuffs.

Yes—there are several photography-focused proofing services built for this use case. Community recommendations include SmugMug, Zenfolio, and PhotoShelter, all of which offer privacy and client-gallery features such as password protection, watermarking, and controls that limit casual downloading or viewing of full-size files. Other services mentioned were ShootProof, Instaproofs, Photobiz, Photocart, aPhotoFolio, ShowItFast, Livebooks, Redcart, Photography Orders, and ProPhoto Blogs.

The best choice depends on which combination of proofing, privacy, and sales tools fits your workflow. In general, look for: password-protected or unlisted galleries, watermarking, display-size limits, and built-in commerce or ordering tools if you plan to sell prints or downloads.

One caveat: no web gallery can make images impossible to copy, but these services can make downloading and casual misuse much less convenient than general photo-sharing sites like Flickr.
