What self-hosted client image archive options support logins, search, and bulk downloads?

I need a simple client-facing archive for finished, approved images. This is not for proofing; it’s for clients to log in later and download original files themselves instead of requesting them by email.
Key requirements:
- each client can log in and see only their own files
- support for uploads and unlimited client downloads
- single-file and multi-file download, ideally with ZIP packaging
- searchable image tags/metadata
- very simple interface for non-technical clients
I’m comfortable setting up web software myself, so self-hosted solutions are preferred, but I’m open to straightforward hosted services if they fit these needs well. What options are worth considering?

I have tested a couple of gallery solutions last year and there are a few options worth looking at in my opinion.
My favourite actually is (used to be) Menalto Gallery. The only reason I stopped using it was the discontinuation of development.
"Piwigo", ended up being my solution of choice with "Zenphoto" as a close runner up.
For both of these there are Lightroom plugins available, so that the online galleries can be maintaine from within Lightroom.
Last but not least there is "Coppermine". Quite powerful bit I find it cumbersome to use.
Thiu is by no means a comprehensive listing, just the stuff that I evaluated a little closer with an emphasis on management abilities through Lightroom.

For self-hosted options, the community suggestions were:
- piwigo — the most recommended in the answers; a dedicated gallery system with client-facing organization features and Lightroom integration available.
- zenphoto — another strong self-hosted gallery option, also with Lightroom plugin support.
- coppermine — capable, but one answer found it more cumbersome to use.
A previously liked option was menalto gallery, but it was noted as discontinued, so it’s not a good choice for a new deployment.
If you’re willing to consider hosted rather than self-hosted, smugmug was specifically mentioned as fitting your requirements well: password-protected albums, search, individual or bulk download, unlimited uploads/downloads, and customizable design for simpler client use.
Based on the answers, piwigo is probably the best self-hosted place to start, with zenphoto as a close alternative. If ease of use matters more than self-hosting, smugmug sounds like the simplest match.
