I’m starting film photography on a budget and want a vintage, grainy look. In digital, I’ve found the lens and post-processing usually matter more than the camera body. Does that still apply with film?

For this specific look, what has the biggest effect: the camera body, the lens, the film stock/ISO, how the film is developed, or how the photo is exposed? For example, do higher-ISO films, underexposure, push processing, developer choice, or older lenses make the biggest difference?

There's a reason beginning film photography classes start with:

  • 35mm B&W film.
  • Normal exposure and development.

When you know what's normal, you can sort out what factors cause what effects when you experiment with different film types, development processes and formats.
