I'm looking for a Mac-based photo management workflow that supports two things:

  1. Hierarchical keywords/tags, such as:
  • animals
    • cats
      • Siamese
      • Maine Coon
    • dogs
      • poodle
      • dachshund
  1. Publishing to Flickr so that one photo can appear in multiple Flickr sets without being uploaded multiple times.

In iPhoto, if the same photo is in two albums, it appears to get published twice to Flickr. What I want is a single uploaded photo library with multiple Flickr sets referencing the same images.

Is Picasa better for this, or is there another Mac tool or plugin that handles hierarchical metadata and Flickr publishing more cleanly?

I would try Lightroom + Jeffrey's flickr plugin. It's a little more expensive, but it's the best tool for what you want.
