What light modifiers work best with an off-camera speedlight?

I’m putting a speedlight off-camera and want to add a stand adapter and some kind of diffuser/modifier for location use. I’m trying to balance softness with light loss, since a speedlight is less powerful than a monolight. Because the flash head is fairly directional, I was wondering whether umbrellas are a poor match, or whether they still work well. Are there modifiers that are generally considered most effective for off-camera speedlights?

When it comes to diffusers you should be looking to use the same sizes as you would for monolights. The flash tube of a monolight often isn't that much larger than the head of a speedlight and the size of the modifier is mainly what creates the effect.

This is echoed by the soft mods section in Strobist blog's gear recommendations. Strobist blog is highly respected by speedlight users and the article includes links to specific products which are more suitable for speedlights.

Umbrellas are a good, common choice for off-camera speedlights. A speedlight is not too directional to use with umbrellas, and white umbrellas in particular spread the light well regardless of the flash’s original beam pattern.

In general, use the same kinds of modifiers you’d consider for monolights; the small source size of a speedlight head is not fundamentally different from many monolight flash tubes. What mainly determines the softness of the light is the size of the modifier relative to the subject, not the fact that the flash is a speedlight.

So you’re likely overthinking the need for extra diffusion layers. Start simple: a white shoot-through or reflective umbrella is an effective, efficient option for location lighting with speedlights. If you want practical guidance on setups and modifier choices, Strobist’s off-camera flash and Lighting 101 resources are widely recommended by speedlight users.
