I bought a used Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens with the metal mount, but it didn't come with a front lens cap. I can't find the diameter marked on the lens. What size lens cap does this lens use, and where should I look on a lens to find that size in the future?

A quick search on the internet suggests it is 58mm. It is often referred to as the 'filter diameter'. Also, as a general rule, on the lens somewhere, maybe around the front optic, there is usually a little 'o' with a line through it like this ø followed by a number of mm. That should be the size to look for. Also, if you have a camera shop nearby you can take the lens in with you, they will probably have various sizes in stock, and will find one to fit it.

A front lens cap for this lens is most likely 58mm. Lens cap size usually matches the lens’s filter thread size, often labeled as the filter diameter.

On many lenses, you can find this marked near the front element with a symbol like “ø” followed by a number, such as “ø58mm.” That’s the size to use when buying a cap or filter.

If you still can’t find the marking or want to be certain, a local camera shop can usually check the lens and match a cap for you quickly.
