Camera equipment can be expensive to replace if it’s stolen, damaged by fire or water, or accidentally dropped. What insurance options are typically available for camera gear, and when is a standard homeowners or renters policy enough versus needing separate professional coverage?

One universal piece of advice is to have your serial numbers written down in some easily accessible place. I send them to myself using Gmail so that they're available from my mobile or any computer with internet access. I know that's a partial answer but the insurance is already location-specific.

It depends mainly on how you use the gear and on the wording of your policy.
From the answers here:
- If you use your equipment professionally or earn money with it, homeowners/renters insurance may not cover it. In that case, ask a broker about dedicated professional photography insurance.
- If you’re a hobbyist, homeowners or renters coverage may be enough, but this varies by policy, so confirm the details with your insurer or broker.
- Professional policies can cover things like theft, fire, water damage, and accidental drops. Some pros also carry event/business-liability style coverage for failure during paid jobs.
A good universal step, regardless of insurance, is to keep a record of all serial numbers and equipment details in an accessible place. That makes claims and police reports much easier if something is lost or stolen.
Best next step: contact your insurer or an insurance broker, explain whether your gear is personal or income-producing, and ask specifically what is and isn’t covered.
