I like the color and aesthetic of film and try to recreate it on my Sony A7C using film simulations. However, Auto ISO often pushes the ISO high, and I end up with a lot of digital noise. I do want some film-like grain in my images, but not harsh digital noise. Is there a best ISO setting or approach for getting a cleaner image while still keeping a film-style look?

The character of noise does not change if you increase ISO, it simply becomes stronger and overwhelms more details of the image. There's no universal appreciation for digital noise (i.e. it's bad) so there is no answer to your question about what's the best.
