I’m using a Canon 600D with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. When I half-press the shutter, I hear the autofocus motor, but I also hear a lower sound. After I release the shutter button, the autofocus sound stops immediately, but this other sound continues for a few seconds before stopping. What is causing that sound?

You're hearing the IS start to activate.

That extra sound is the lens’s image stabilization (IS) system activating, not a problem with the autofocus motor. On the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, the IS starts when you half-press the shutter and may continue running briefly after you release it, which is why you still hear it for a few seconds.
This is normal behavior. If you switch IS off on the lens, that sound should stop. With IS enabled, the lens is helping reduce blur from camera shake, especially at slower shutter speeds.
