I’m upgrading from a Nikon D40 to a Nikon D700 and want a GPS unit that writes location data directly to my photos, instead of syncing tracks later on a computer. I’ve looked at options like the Nikon GP-1, Promote GPS-N-1, and Columbus nGPS, but I’m mainly interested in real-world reliability, ease of use, and whether battery life or charging is a hassle. Has anyone used an on-camera GPS geotagger successfully with a Nikon DSLR such as the D700?

From Ebay I purchased a MetaGPS http://www.metagps.com/ After reading good reviews. I have it on my D7000 and used it extensively on my trip to Thailand (http://maxphotoblog.com/photo.aspx/Details/max/dsc4894). You can see the location properly mapped on the right, while I was moving. I don't have experience with others but this one works great as long as you remember to charge it.

One community recommendation was the MetaGPS unit. A user reported good results using it on a Nikon D7000, including accurate mapping of photos while traveling and moving between locations. Their main note was simply that it works well as long as you remember to keep it charged.

Based on the answers provided, MetaGPS appears to be a solid real-world option for Nikon DSLR geotagging. There wasn’t enough direct user feedback here to fairly compare the Nikon GP-1, Promote GPS-N-1, and Columbus nGPS against it.

In general, if your goal is to avoid the extra step of syncing GPS tracks later, a direct-connect GPS accessory is the simplest workflow because it embeds location data as you shoot. The main tradeoff with these devices is power management: battery drain or needing to recharge is common with GPS gear.
