Can a Nikon D7000 add GPS coordinates to NEF/RAW files at capture time?

I’m using a Nikon DSLR such as the D7000, which doesn’t have built-in GPS. Is there an accessory that can connect to the camera and embed GPS location data directly into the image metadata at the moment of capture, so I can avoid syncing a separate GPS track later in post-processing?

I personally use my Android device to record a track and then tag the images in Lightroom as discussed here: http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/adobe-lightroom-geotagging.html

Now that I have been doing that I can see why you want to get a device:-) The nikon mailing list has discussed this before and several people have used a di-gps device: http://www.dawntech.hk/di-GPS/index.htm

One such discussion on D1iscussion can be found here: http://www.d1scussion.com/thread/202788/#r202802

Nikon makes one: http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/GPS/25396/GP-1-GPS-Unit.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.CompatibleWith

While trying to find the di-gps I also found this: http://blog.gerardprins.com/blog2.php/2009/06/05/competition-nikon-gp1-promote-gps-d90

Yes. Nikon DSLRs such as the D7000 can use an external GPS receiver to write location data into the image metadata at capture time. Nikon’s own GP-1 is one option, and several third-party geotagging units were also mentioned, including di-GPS, Solmeta, Geometr, and Promote.

These devices connect to the camera’s GPS/remote port and are intended specifically for real-time geotagging, so you can avoid the separate track-log syncing workflow.

A different approach mentioned was Eye-Fi Geo/Explore/Pro cards, which can add location information based on nearby Wi-Fi networks when images are uploaded, but that is not the same as true GPS written by the camera at capture time.

So if your goal is GPS coordinates embedded directly into your Nikon RAW/NEF files when you press the shutter, the answer is yes: use a compatible external GPS accessory such as the Nikon GP-1 or a compatible third-party unit.
