I like Lightroom’s hierarchical keyword/tag system, where nested tags let you apply related keywords efficiently. I’m looking for a free or inexpensive alternative for organizing photos. Picasa doesn’t seem to support this. Do apps like digiKam or iTag offer hierarchical keywords, or are there other photo management programs that do?

Yes. The feature you’re looking for is usually called hierarchical keywords or categories. Based on the community replies, several alternatives support it:
- F-Spot
- Shotwell
- PicaJet FX / Daminion
- IMatch
- ID Imager
One answer notes that F-Spot and Shotwell support hierarchical tags but are Linux-only, so operating system matters. Another notes that some programs may describe the feature as “categories” rather than “hierarchical keywords.”
So if you’re comparing software, search for those terms in the feature list and check platform support first. If you want a free option, the Linux apps mentioned may be worth a look; if you’re open to low-cost DAM software, the other listed programs also support nested tagging.
